MATTHEW
Chapter 20
Kingdom Rewards, Status and Compassion of Jesus
Parable of the Vineyard Workers
-
1. FOR the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an
householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard.
-
-
2.↓ And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent
them into his vineyard.
-
-
Notes
-
° These are workers that have now been hired, and have agreed to a wage
MF-NCC
Hebrews 11:6 — But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that
diligently seek him.
° Remember that name carries with it "one who pays wages."
MF-NCC
-
3. And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle
in the marketplace,
-
-
4.↓ And said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you. And
they went their way.
-
-
Notes
-
° The laborers in the first hour (6 AM) agreed to a wage
° These laborers in the 3rd hour (9 AM) did not negotiate a wage
MF-NCC
-
5.↓ Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise.
-
-
Notes
-
° Again at noon and at 3 PM the same negotiation occurs
° These laborers are hired throughout the day but not negotiating a wage beforehand, they are trusting that the Master is just
MF-NCC
-
6.↓ And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith unto them, Why stand ye here all the
day idle?
-
-
Notes
-
° In each of the subsequent scenarios, these are laborers, so they are ready and capable to work, but have not been called into a specific service yet
° These laborers were hired near the final hour
MF-NCC
-
7.↓ They say unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith unto htem, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that
shall ye receive.
-
-
Notes
-
° Again, The Lord does not tell them what the wage will be, and yet they trust that He will give them whatsoever is just
MF-NCC
-
8.↓ So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the labourers, and give
them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first.
-
-
Notes
-
° Those hired last are the first to recieve their wages, that is an interesting concept
MF-NCC
-
9. And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny.
-
-
10.↓ But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny.
-
-
Notes
-
° Those that were hired in the first hour were assuming that they would receive more because those that only worked the last hour received the same
MF-NCC
-
11.↓ And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house,
-
-
Notes
-
° Murmuring is a very quick way to be out of favor with The Lord, and typically is associated with someone that is dissatisfied with their lot from The Lord
MF-NCC
Exodus 16:8 — And Moses said, This shall be, when the LORD shall give you in the evening flesh to eat, and in the morning bread to the full; for that the LORD heareth your murmurings
which ye murmur against him: and what are we? your murmuring are not against us, but against the LORD.
-
12.↓ Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of
the day.
-
-
Notes
-
° Remember that this is Jesus' inheritance He is distributing
° Do you trust that He is just and righteous?
MF-NCC
-
13. But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong:
didst not thou agree with me for a penny?
-
-
14. Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last , even as unto thee.
-
-
15.↓ Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am
good?
-
-
Notes
-
° Do not be arrogant in thinking you should deserve something better, this is a major heart issue
MF-NCC
-
16.↓↓ So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be
called, but few chosen.
-
-
Notes
-
° The laborers are ready, but not hired yet for a specific task
° Some agree to a specific wage at the time of entering the field of service
° Others just enter into the field of service out of faith, and trust that The Master is faithful to reward them in a righteous manner
° Those that worked and labored less time were rewarded with the same wage
° In this parable, The Lord does not clarify what job each group was hired for, so could the last group have simply worked exponentially harder thatn the first group? It is not clear...
° For example, how long do you have to love His appearing to receive the crown of righteousness?
MF-NCC
II Timothy 4:8 — Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that
love his appearing.

Death, Resurrection Foretold
-
17. And Jesus going up to Jerusalem took the twelve disciples apart in the way, and said unto them,
-
-
18. Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they
shall condemn him to death,
-
-
19. And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and
to crucify him: and the third day he shall rise again.
-
A Mother's Requst of Jesus for Her Sons
-
20. Then came to him the mother of Zebedee's children with her sons, worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him.
-
-
21. And he said unto her, What wilt thou? She saith unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on the right hand, and the other
on the left, in thy kingdom.
-
